Learner Profiles

Priya — Second-Year PhD Student (Synthetic Chemistry)

Priya is in the second year of her PhD in synthetic organic chemistry. She generates NMR, IR, and mass spectrometry data daily and currently stores everything in a folder on her laptop labelled “PhD data”. She has never written a data management plan and is not sure what her funder requires. She hopes to learn how to organise her data more systematically and understand what she will need to do before submitting her thesis.

James — Postdoc (Computational Chemistry)

James has just started a postdoc position, which will involve running DFT calculations and molecular dynamics simulations, generating large datasets on HPC clusters. He is aware of FAIR data principles but is unsure which repositories to use for computational chemistry data or how to write a good data access statement. He is about to submit his first first-author paper from his PhD work and wants to get the data sharing right.

Aisha — First-Year PhD Student (Analytical / Materials Chemistry)

Aisha works at an interface between chemistry and materials science, using a mix of techniques including XRD, electron microscopy, and high-throughput screening. Someone in her group recently lost several weeks of processed data when their laptop was stolen, so she wants to put a proper backup and storage strategy in place. She is also curious about electronic lab notebooks after her supervisor mentioned them.
